History

This institution was established in 1955 by the late Dr. Antonio C. Martinez, a general surgeon, and his wife Luz Agustin as a medium sized secondary hospital located close to the boundery of the western part of the tondo of Manila and the south west part of the municipality of Caloocan known as Maypajo district. During those periods, there were no hospital in this region and the majority of the residence therein belongs to the average-income group.

With the primary intention of serving low-income patients who cannot afford the services of the bigger medical center in Manila, it chose to be a community oriented hospital to them and to protect the real image of a rural medical institution. It was with this in mind that this institution was originally named "Country Clinic".

To make hospitalization affordable to its clientele, Dr. Martinez converted part of their residence as patient's ward and improvised an operating room/delivery room unit provided with basic equipment's for minor and major surgical interventions. He invited physicians in various specialties to be members of their medical staff.

After five years, they decided to expand to accommodate the growing number of patients seeking its services by constructing a bigger edifice and upgrading its facilities. Accordingly, the hospital was renamed Martinez Memorial Hospital and Colleges in his memory.
